Perfect Match

The Federal Election Commission has approved matching funds for six presidential candidates. Democrats Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, and Dennis Kucinich, Republican Duncan Hunter, and independent Ralph Nader will receive more than $7 million collectively for their campaigns, bringing the total of matching funds approved for the 2008 election to about $26.7 million.

$46 Million Short

Democrat Dennis Kucinich’s presidential campaign raised less than $4 million in 2007, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.  In an interview last year, Kucinich told the Center that he needed to raise lots more than that. “I think that if we are able to raise $50 million — which is a large amount of money, but which would be dwarfed by what we are hearing other campaigns are raising — I could run a competitive campaign,” he said. “And I can win.”

No Longer a Menace

Democrat Dennis Kucinich tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he is withdrawing from the 2008 presidential race, saying, “After being precluded from all of the debates . . . I just have to recognize that that, plus the polarization that’s happening in the race, makes it very difficult.”
