Democrats John Edwards and Barack Obama make a point of saying that they don’t accept contributions from political action committees, but the gestures don’t mean all that much, The Politico, a Washington-based political newspaper, reports. The $2.6 million that PACs have given to the major presidential candidates this year accounts for only 0.7 percent of their receipts. Hillary Clinton has accepted $747,000 in PAC money, the most of any candidate, but it makes up less than 1 percent of her total contributions.

Democrat John Edwards is certified as eligible for primary matching funds by the Federal Election Commission. His campaign qualifies for up to $21 million in public money but must limit its overall spending in the primaries to about $50 million.
