Republican John McCain brands as “gutter politics” allegations (fueled by a New York Times investigation) that he did legislative favors for a Washington lobbyist or her clients, The Washington Post reports. McCain, who’s hired Washington superlawyer Robert Bennett to deal with the matter, says that he has “never done any favors for anybody.”
The $19 Million Pie

The Federal Election Commission has approved a total of more than $19 million in federal matching funds for seven presidential candidates, with the lion’s share going to Democrat John Edwards ($8.8 million) and Republican John McCain ($5.8 million).

The seven front-runners in the 2008 presidential race — Democrats Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and Barack Obama, and Republicans Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Fred Thompson — “all have assets that would place them in the nation’s top 10 percent of households, and most of them in the top 0.5 percent,” Money magazine reports. Romney leads the pack with assets of $92.3 million to $276.2 million, plus three homes valued at $18.7 million.

Republican John McCain urges New Hampshire’s attorney general to investigate “push poll” calls that target rival Mitt Romney’s religion and military deferments, according to The Hill, a Washington-based political newspaper. Reporters in New Hampshire have so far been unable to trace the sponsor of the calls.
The Trickle Before the Flood?

The Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America, a nonprofit organization that’s running television ads featuring Republican John McCain, might be “the first trickle in the flood of hundreds of millions of dollars” from similar groups trying to influence the election, The New York Times reports. McCain has asked supporters to refrain from making donations to the organization or any other such groups supporting his candidacy.
