Republican John McCain holds the biggest fundraiser of his career, projected to raise about $7 million for his campaign, The Washington Post reports. The New York event is a joint fundraising effort with the Republican National Committee and several state committees, allowing McCain to accept as much as $70,000 from each guest. In attendance: investment banker Lewis M. Eisenberg, Senator Joseph Lieberman, and “special guest” former rival Rudy Giuliani.

In an e-mail to major fundraisers, Rick Davis, Republican John McCain’s campaign manager, asks for contributions to help retire former candidate Rudy Giuliani’s campaign debt of about $3.1 million, The Politico reports. The sooner Giuliani’s debt is paid off, Davis explains, the sooner he can spend his time raising money for McCain.

Republican Rudy Giuliani’s campaign spent $48.8 million in 2007 yet earned only one delegate, the Los Angeles Times reports. This moves him ahead of Republican John Connally as the candidate with the worst bang-for-the-buck ever. (Connally, after spending $11 million in his bid for the 1980 GOP presidential nomination, had secured the support of only a single delegate, Mrs. Ada Mills of Arkansas, who became known as the “$11 million delegate.”)

Republican Rudy Giuliani announces that he is withdrawing from the 2008 presidential race. Although his campaign raised more than $45 million through September 2007, Giuliani’s best showing was a third-place finish in the Florida primary.
