Contribution Limits Legal — For Now
BY Sarah Laskow | July 01, 2008
A federal judge in Washington, D.C., denied a request by SpeechNow.org, a conservative-leaning 527 group, to invalidate the contribution limits that apply to the group.
Speechnow.org argued that contribution limits for independent groups restrict free speech.
In his decision, District Judge James Robertson wrote: “Legally independent 527 groups can and do bear seals of approval from political parties. SpeechNow’s carefully constructed test-case embodiment of ‘independence’ does not shield it from reasonable campaign finance regulation.”
Speechnow.org plans to appeal the ruling, and some election law experts expect the Supreme Court to take up the case.
