Businessman Philip J. Martin, a top official of Republican Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign, pleaded no contest in 1983 to cocaine-trafficking and conspiracy charges, The Washington Post reports. Martin, one of Thompson’s top fundraisers and closest advisers, has saved the campaign more than $100,000 by putting his twin-engine Cessna 560 Citation at its disposal. Thompson’s campaign told the Post that the candidate was not aware of Martin’s criminal history.
