Barack Obama - Democratic
Barack Obama, a Democrat, is the junior U.S. senator from Illinois. From 1997 through 2004 he served two terms in the Illinois State Senate, and in 2000 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Simultaneously, Obama practiced private law in Chicago and lectured on constitutional law at the University of Chicago. His wife, Michelle, is vice president of community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Presidential Campaign
Obama announced the formation of an exploratory committee on January 16, 2007, and on February 10 he declared his candidacy for the presidency at a rally in Illinois.
