Dennis Kucinich - Democratic

Withdrawn button graphic

Dennis Kucinich, a Democrat, is a U.S. representative from Ohio. He is making his second White House bid, after seeking the Democratic nomination in 2004. Kucinich was first elected to the Cleveland City Council in 1969, as a 23-year-old.  He was a councilman from 1970 to 1975, and then clerk of the Cleveland Municipal Court for two years. In 1977, Kucinich was elected mayor of Cleveland. He was defeated for reelection in 1979. After losing a 1982 race for Ohio secretary of state, he was elected again to the Cleveland City Council in 1983. Rather than seek reelection, Kucinich ran for governor as an independent, then withdrew from the race in August 1986. After two unsuccessful races for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1988 and 1992, he won a seat in the Ohio Senate in 1994. Two years later, Kucinich was elected to the U.S. House. Outside of politics, Kucinich once ran his own communications and consulting firm and has worked in various other jobs. His wife, Elizabeth, has worked for several charities and nonprofit organizations, including the American Monetary Institute, which advocates for a more “economically just” monetary policy.
