Fred Thompson - Republican

Fred Dalton Thompson, a Republican, was a U.S. senator from Tennessee. He was the minority counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, the “Watergate Committee,” from 1973 through 1974.  Prior to and since his time in the Senate, Thompson has been a film and television actor. In addition to his role as District Attorney Arthur Branch on all four Law & Order series, he has appeared in more than a dozen movies, including The Hunt for Red October, Die Hard 2, Aces: Iron Eagle III, and In the Line of Fire.  His wife, Jeri, is a former Republican strategist and media consultant.

Presidential Campaign

Thompson officially announced his candidacy for president on a September 5, 2007, broadcast of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  He withdrew from the race on January 22, 2008.
