Jim Gilmore - Republican
Jim Gilmore, a Republican, was elected governor of Virginia in 1997. Gilmore, a lawyer, has held two other elected offices in Virginia: commonwealth’s attorney for Henrico County from 1988 to 1994 and state attorney general from 1994 to 1998. An Army veteran, Gilmore also headed the Republican National Committee in 2001. He is now a partner in the Washington law firm of Kelley Drye & Warren and heads the nonprofit group NCORP (National Council on Readiness and Preparedness) which works to strengthen local, state, and federal capabilities to respond to terrorist attacks. His wife, Roxane, is a professor of classics at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia.
Presidential Campaign
Gilmore announced the formation of an exploratory committee on December 19, 2006, and on April 26, 2007, he declared his candidacy in a live webcast from the Republican headquarters in Iowa. Gilmore withdrew from the race on July 14, 2007.
