Mike Gravel - Democratic
Mike Gravel, a Democrat, was a two-term U.S. senator from Alaska, from 1969 through 1981. Prior to that, Gravel served in the U.S. Army and was a state representative, from 1963 to 1966, becoming speaker of the House in his final year. In 1972, he sought the Democratic vice presidential nomination. In 1980, Gravel was defeated in the Democratic Senate primary; he’s since worked in real estate and consulting. He is the founder of three organizations dedicated to voter initiatives. He is married to Whitney Stewart Gravel, a former dean of students at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
Presidential Campaign
Gravel declared his candidacy on April 17, 2006, at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington. He abandoned his campaign for the Democratic nomination — and announced his candidacy for the Libertarian Party’s nod — on March 26, 2008. His campaign ended when Bob Barr won the Libertarian nomination on May 25, 2008.
