Tom Tancredo - Republican

Tom Tancredo, a Republican, is a U.S. representative from Colorado. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan appointed Tancredo, a former teacher, to be regional representative for the U.S. Department of Education in Denver, and he retained that position until 1992. Tancredo first ran for office in 1976 while he was teaching at a Colorado junior high school. He was elected to the state’s legislature, where he served until 1981. Tancredo also was president of the Independence Institute, a libertarian think tank based in Colorado. His wife, Jackie, is a teacher.

Tancredo is on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Natural Resources.

Presidential Campaign

Tancredo announced the formation of an exploratory committee on January 16, 2007, and he declared his candidacy on an Iowa radio show on April 2, 2007.  He announced his withdrawal from the race on December 20, 2007.
