Tom Vilsack - Democratic

Tom Vilsack, a Democrat, was a two-term governor of Iowa. He began his political career in 1987 after the mayor of rural Mount Pleasant was murdered. Vilsack, a laywer, was elected the new mayor and held the position for five years, until he was elected to the Iowa State Senate. During his governorship, Vilsack also chaired the Democratic Governors Association and the Democratic Leadership Council.  His wife, Christie, is a former teacher and a civic activist.

Presidential Campaign

Vilsack declared his candidacy on November 30, 2006, but on February 23, 2007, he announced that he was withdrawing from the race. He has subsequently endorsed Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.
