Tommy Thompson - Republican
Tommy G. Thompson, a Republican, was the U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services from 2001 to 2005. Before that, he was governor of Wisconsin from 1987 to 2001. Thompson, a lawyer, was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1966 and rose to the position of minority leader in 1981. Since leaving public service, he has been the president of Logistics Health, Inc., which provides health-care programs to commercial and government clients; a senior partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, a Washington-based law firm; and a senior adviser to Deloitte & Touche USA. His wife, Sue Ann, is the president of the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization.
Presidential Campaign
Thompson announced the formation of an exploratory committee on December 16, 2006, and he declared his candidacy in an interview on April 1, 2007. He withdrew from the race on August 12, 2007.
